He was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease in his early 50's and died of the disease about a year after his diagnosis. Catfish was an 8x All-Star, 5x World Series Champion, 1974 AL Cy Young Award winner, 2x MLB wins leader, 1974 AL ERA leader, Oakland A's # 27 retired, Baseball HOF Induction - 1987 and he pitched a perfect game on May 8, 1968.
